Lawrence Atkinson was born on 17 January 1873 at Chorlton upon Medlock, near Manchester. He was a singing coach and a self-taught artist who exhibited at the 1913 Allied Artists Exhibition. He was considered Fauvist, but converted to Vorticism and attended the Rebel Art Centre, early 1914.

Atkinson was a signatory of the Vorticist Manifesto in Blast, and exhibited works at the 1915 Vorticist Exhibition, and at the 1916 London Group Exhibition.

He held a one man show at the Eldar Gallery, London in May 1921. He continued working in a Vorticist style for some years, concentrating in Sculpture in later life. He died 21 September 1931 in Paris.

Lawrence Atkinson's grandson Christian Atkinson is now producing work that bears a very strong resemblance to Lawrence's work, and more information can be found here.
